Reading at Sandon

At Sandon we use a balanced approach to teaching reading:

reading

How do we teach reading at Sandon?

•      Daily phonics/sensory phonics

•      Learning words by sight in class

•      Guided reading through our English curriculum – reading as a class/sensory books

•      Reading comprehension tasks at single-word and full text level through our English curriculum

•      Shared reading daily in the hall at the end of the day

•      Independent reading – each pupil is assigned a reading book and reading record which is read daily in class and taken home to be read by parent/carer

Phonics – Letters and Sounds/Sensory Phonics

At Sandon, Phonics is taught in an individualised and personal manner. We incorporate Sensory Phonics and Letters and Sounds Phonics to ensure that learning is meaningful for every pupil. For some classes, Sensory Phonics is used to develop listening skills and to give the opportunity for pupils to explore letters and sounds. For other classes, we follow Letters and Sounds (published by the Department for Education and Skills). Pupils following Letters and Sounds take home fully decodable Phonics books at the right level for their learning.
