AMBERGATE Vs. WILDS LODGE
In the opening fixture of the SEN Football League, Ambergate hosted Wilds Lodge from Empingham.
Last year, Ambergate were on the receiving end of a heavy defeat from Wilds Lodge, so the team knew this would be a very difficult match. Ambergate started the game very brightly, with Harry Foxon dictating the play impressively, along with excellent leadership qualities. The team were working very hard to keep Wilds Lodge’s lively forwards at bay, and were rewarded for their efforts when Bradley Smith opened the scoring for the hosts with a brave header (1-0).
Ambergate had home advantage, playing on their very own astro-turf surface and were certainly making the most of it. Bradley Smith was an aerial threat and he powered in another header from a Nathan Aldridge throw-in (2-0). Ambergate were in control but with just stoppage time remaining at the end of the first half, Wilds Lodge got a goal back (2-1).
The second half was crazy! Certainly the most entertaining half of football to date being played on the astro-turf surface at Ambergate. Goals were flying in from everywhere! First, Wilds Lodge equalised with a low drive into the corner of Josh Melloy’s goal (2-2). Next, Ambergate regained the lead with Harry Foxon finishing a clever move involving Tyler Wakefield and Kieron Robinson (3-2). A response was needed from Wilds Lodge and it was provided with style. The visitors were unplayable for a 20 minute period, which saw their impressive number 7 winger, score a magical hat-trick! (3-5).
Ambergate had played so well but it looked as though Wilds Lodges 100% record would remain. Bradley Smith and Harry Foxon had other ideas though. With just 5 minutes remaining, Harry Foxon pulled a goal back when he blasted in a free-kick from the left. Ambergate pushed everyone forward and after a goal-mouth scramble the ball fell to Harry Foxon who smashed in an equaliser into the roof of the net (5-5). Ambergate had pulled off a comeback! With the PE Teaching Staff still celebrating the equaliser, Ambergate defender Kieron Robinson hit a long ball towards the opposing penalty box and what happened next was a moment that will be remembered for a very long time! Bradley Smith, on the turn, volleyed the ball from mid-air straight into the top corner!!!!! (6-5). Ambergate had won with just seconds remaining and had done so via a truly outstanding goal!!
Final Score: Ambergate Sports College 6 vs. 5 Wilds Lodge
Player of the match: Jointly awarded to Harry Foxon and Bradley Smith for both scoring hat-tricks!
