Ambergate Footy Triumph!
Ambergate’s Upper School Football Team travelled to Spalding on a wet and windy afternoon yesterday to face the Priory School.
The match started with both teams battling well but both struggling to keep the ball down on the muddy surface. After a scrappy opening, 20 minutes in, Ambergate Captain, Harry Foxon, opened the scoring with a superb individual effort. Foxon took the ball from his own half at pace, cutting in from the left and beating a defender, slotting the ball impressively past the goalkeeper into the far right hand corner. The goal immediately lifted the players and Ambergate were unstoppable for the rest of the half.
The second goal was pure pace and power from Tyler Wakefield. From a Spalding corner, Ambergate went on the counter attack and Wakefield picked up the ball on the right. The opposing defence simply couldn’t cope with the speed of Wakefield as he ran into the box and blasted the ball into the bottom corner (0-2). The third came almost immediately from the restart in a wonderful team move. Kieron Robinson played the ball across the field to Tyler Wakefield, who smartly flicked the ball in behind to Harry Foxon, Foxon cut it back to William Moore to smash it home (0-3).
The second half got underway and Ambergate were straight back on the attack. Spalding Priory made some changes at half-time and looked more threatening, causing Ambergate goalkeeper, Josh Melloy, to make a string of impressive saves. The Priory did get a goal back when a corner wasn’t fully cleared and the ball was played across the goal and met by the opposing striker (1-3). This goal proved to be a consolation though as Harry Foxon secured another victory, finishing off another great team move by smashing the ball into the roof of the net (1-4). As The Priory threw players forward, Ambergate had multiple chances to score more in the closing stages, however Harry Foxon, Tyler Wakefield and Richard Curnow were kept out by impressive goalkeeping.
Final score – Spalding Priory 1 vs. 4 Ambergate Sports College
Player of the match – Kieron Robinson, for defending excellently and his consistency in playing the ball out from the back.
