Ambergate Sports College have now been given their Green Flag Award!
This really is a cause for celebration following all the pupil and staff hard work, and commitment to the project.
In 2018, an Eco Committee was set up and lunch clubs were held each week, this still continues to date. In March of that same year, the Eco Committee, made up of upper school pupils, and under the guidance of Mrs Capindale, achieved the Bronze Award from Eco Schools. This was a massive achievement, as the team put into place the fundamental things that we should have been doing, the biggest of which being recycling.
Following this, a lower school Eco Committee was created, led by Mrs Asken, which meant we had representatives for the whole school!
Due to the hard work from pupils and the staff team, the Silver Award was achieved, just a few months later in July 2018!
After this, we ensured that all things Eco were embedded into our curriculum, and the school’s focus became Litter, Waste, and Recycling, to assist us with our Green Flag application.
The whole school supported us with these categories, ensuring they were at the forefront of all our minds, when carrying out work within the curriculum.
This year, Ambergate welcomed Audrey, the Eco School Assessor, and the Eco Committee’s took great pride in showing her around school, and the improvements that have been put in place.
Audrey’s report said, “I was so impressed with all of the children I met today. They were positive and courteous and able to talk in detail about the Eco projects currently underway. With committed support from members of staff, especially Mrs Bennington, Mrs Capindale, Mrs Asken and Mr Buckberry, there is much purposeful Eco-activity threaded through the school, its ethos and its curriculum. Due to the nature of the setting, much of the Eco-group work is supported by adults, with a strong underlying understanding of the 3 projects, especially recycling. It was a great pleasure to visit Ambergate and to see the inspirational work they do. Well done to everyone”.
We were awarded our Green Flag in April 2019, but due to continuing building improvements on site, we haven’t as yet been able to erect our flag pole. As soon as the works are completed, we will be flying our Green Flag with pride!
Our future plans are to continue the fantastic work we have achieved, and we have begun looking at introducing the next 3 categories for our Green Flag renewal, which are school grounds, marine, and healthy living.
